Tubac Chanukah Lights

In October 1775, Juan Bautista De Anza led 240 settlers from Tubac to found a settlement in San Francisco. In 1880, a Jewish merchant from San Francisco, Jacob Isaacson, came to the Santa Cruz Valley and founded a trading post calling it Isaactown. Two years later the Southern Pacific Railroad laid a track through there making it the first mail connection between the U.S. and Mexico. The town name was changed to Nogales because of the black walnut (Nogal) trees.

In 1864, Nathan Appel was a merchant and member of the Jewish community providing goods to the troops in Tubac. He was elected to the first territorial legislature.

Just like the Jewish families of Nogales and Tubac historically would have done, we celebrate the Jewish tradition of Chanukah with the lighting of the Menorah. The festival of lights commemorates the struggle for freedom to worship as one chooses.
